Staking Still a Viable Option in Nevada

Wednesday, January 28th, 2015

Numerous reports over the week have discussed a law that is currently under proposal in the state of Nevada. This new law seemed to have language that would stop players from staking or being staked in the game of poker. This is a common practice, especially at major events including the World Series of Poker. It has now been announced that the new bill is referring to sports betting and poker staking will not be an issue.

A.G. Burnett, the Chairman of the Nevada Gaming Control Board, spoke with Pokerfuse and stated that the law would only apply to sports betting and not the game of poker. The new bill, titled SB 40, was filed for the Gaming Control Board and stated that wagering on ‘future contingent events’ made many believe that poker would be considered in this grouping.

The bill states that anyone found to be receiving any compensation or reward, directly or indirectly, as well as a percentage or share of money or property played, of a wager not licensed under a state, municipal or federal law would be subject to legal punishment. As explained by Burnett, the term ‘future contingent event’ is in regards to sports books not always taking strictly sports related bets and the bill is centered on bets taking place in sports books and nothing else.

This is good news to players who take part in staking. As mentioned, the WSOP is the most common occurrence of poker staking known to the general public. Many professional players will sell a piece of the poker action to be able to take part in high buy-in event without having to put up their own cash. This can also be said for recreational players who may not be able to afford the high buy-in for such events as the Main Event which has a $10,000 fee.

Garden State Super Series Event #13 Sees Major Turnout

Wednesday, January 21st, 2015

party_32x32In the United States, it can be difficult to find a good poker tournament to compete in online. New Jersey, Delaware and Nevada are the only states that offer online poker gaming. Because of the requirements of online gaming within the individual states, players must actually be within the borders of one of the given states to be able to take part in online poker gaming. New Jersey has taken the lead as the top provider of poker gaming and continues to offer quality tournaments on a regular basis.

A new series that players have been taken advantage of has proved to be quite profitable for gamers. The Garden State Super Series has been very popular for gamers in New Jersey and can be enjoyed by players at BorgataPoker and Partypoker NJ. Several events took place over the weekend with the standout tournament being event #13.

This event was a big success, offering $100,000 in guaranteed prize money and operating in No Limit Hold’em format. 472 players competed in the event, posting the $200 buy-in to compete. The event did not reach the guarantee but an overlay was produced by the online poker sites.

Once final table play began, six players decided to chop the prize pool with TimmyKGB17 earning the largest prize of $10,275. A slightly smaller prize of $10,071 would go to BF-WhizKid while the final four players, Smoeseph, debtoverload8d, Godzilla and PeoplesChamp earned the same prize money at $9,271.

The series has been a success and continues to be a solid opportunity for players to enjoy online poker gaming. Players can continue to visit Borgata and Party to enjoy online poker gaming such as the GSSS and other top gaming options. Players who are located in New Jersey can take part in the regular gaming by visiting the online poker sites and making a deposit to get started. Cash gaming as well as guaranteed tournaments take place each day for players to enjoy.

New Jersey Ends 2014 on a Positive Note

Thursday, January 15th, 2015

file4741238088930The state of New Jersey has seen some struggle over the past year with casinos closing, online poker seeing less than stellar earnings and more. To close out the year, the state of New Jersey was able to end on a high note as the latest struggles facing the state’s gambling industry. Figures were just released this week showing that the gaming options of the state were able to earn $10.7 million in online earnings which is a nice increase from December of last year.

In 2013, the state was able to earn $6.6 million within the month of December and with the earnings from last year, the state saw an increase of just over $4 million. When it comes to online poker, the state was able to earn just over $2 million in online poker revenues for the month of December in 2014. This was the highest revenues the state had seen for a few months, which was a great way to end the year.

For 2015, the state has some additions already that will help the industry as the year has just begun. Financial institutions have gradually eased up on the restrictions involved along with payment processing so players will be able to easily deposit and withdraw funds with online gaming. Secondly, the 888 Poker site of New Jersey as well as WSOP have teamed up to combine player pools to help increase liquidity. Both sites will offer additional traffic numbers so that players have more competition on the virtual felt.

These changes as well as a New Year will help the city to hopefully have a better year with online gaming revenues as well as land based casino gaming. Other states are beginning to become interested in online gaming including three states already having announced legislation considerations. It will be interesting to see where the industry will stand after 2015. The state is currently the top leader in online gaming but this could easily change if new states begin to offer online gaming this year.

Online Poker Revenues Continue to Decrease in New Jersey

Wednesday, December 17th, 2014

file4741238088930One year of online poker gaming has come and gone in the state of New Jersey and gaming officials are most certainly not happy with the most recent results. According to the figures released, the state has seen the lowest revenues since online gaming began one year ago.

The state of New Jersey offers both casino and poker gaming online and is earns the most poker revenues for online game play when comparing Nevada and Delaware to the state’s figures. However, over the past few months, New Jersey has seen a significant decrease month after month in revenue earnings.

The total amount earned in gaming revenues for November was $8.7 million. $1,877,603 of that total was produced by online poker gaming according to the figures released by gaming regulators. This is almost $100,000 less than October revenues for poker and a continual decrease in online poker overall. Despite the lower revenue numbers, the state does continue to see new signups online with just over 506,172 accounts being created overall which is an increase of almost 6% from October to November.

New Jersey did lose some online gaming outlets with the closure of Betfair and then Ultimate Gaming soon after. The two online poker sites were not the most popular but would affect the overall revenues of the state. Now only two land based casino operators remain; Caesars and the Borgata. Both are able to generate online poker revenues and offer four different poker sites for online gaming.

It will be interesting to see what the New Year brings for online poker in the state of New Jersey as well as for the United States. The state may partner up with Nevada and Delaware if the interstate gaming begins and we may see even more states get in on the online gaming action in 2015.

Dan Bilzerian In Legal Trouble

Wednesday, December 10th, 2014

Dan Bilzerian is a high stakes poker pro who is known more for his antics away from the poker table than his poker game play. Bilzerian has a huge following on Instagram and across social media platforms, always posting pictures of naked women or his antics on and off the felt. Many people follow Bilzerian to see what he might do next but according to recent reports, the pro is now in some hot water for his actions over the past weekend.

Bilzerian was visiting a nightclub in Miami when he allegedly kicked a woman in the face. A video was recently released that shows someone who appears to be the poker pro kicking the woman at the club. On Tuesday, the poker pro was arrested while at the LAX on a felony charge that was not specified. Could this be due to the incident with the young woman or something else?

According to a report at TMZ, the poker pro was accused of attempting the make explosives and the warrant for his arrest was issued back in November. The warrant was apparently kept quiet until now that Bilzerian was arrested. It has also been reported that the poker pro is being held in jail without bail. According to the report, he may face as much as six years in prison for the charge he faces.

The gossip site reports that Bilzerian was charged with the felony after he was found to have ammonium and aluminum powder with ammonium nitrate mix. When these three chemicals are put together, they will create something like TNT. It is well-known that Bilzerian is a fan of weapons and has been known to show pictures of weapons on social media sites, so the idea behind the charges is not very farfetched. It will be interesting to see what happens in the coming days as more information is sure to be released in this case.

Casino Robber Deemed Mentally Unstable

Wednesday, November 26th, 2014

file4741238088930Last summer a robbery took place at the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas that rocked the casino industry. A man entered the casino and took a ton of cash and has seen time in court. Scott Alan Carmitchel of Kansas was in court this past week and a judge ruled he was unfit to stand trial based on psychological reasons.

Carmitchel has been charged with robbing the Las Vegas Casino and appeared in court soon after wearing a mask and blanket. During his mugshot pictures, the suspect had to be restrained and would not even speak. The judge ruled at the time that Carmitchel ‘might have mental problems’.

The suspect also refused to open his eyes or even acknowledge where he was during the appearance in court. He faces federal charges of interference with commerce and has acted very strangely during the entire ordeal. The money that the suspect was able to receive was spent on sex workers and shopping, some $43,000 spent by Carmitchel.

Carmitchel was caught after a tourist told police that he was offered $300 to rent the suspect a hotel room. Carmitchel spent time in jail in the late 1990s for a robbery and also spent time in jail about a year ago for making a criminal threat. When the incident first occurred, Carmitchel stated that was at the casino but did not remember what happened while he was there.

The Bellagio Casino has been subject to robbery in the past with the huge craps heist back in 2011. The robber managed to take $1.5 million in chips from the casino gaming floor. An arrest was made in that case just like in the most recent robbery. The casino continues to make changes to the security measures to ensure that this type of robbery does not happen again in the future.

Elderly Woman Arrested for Hosting Illegal Poker Game

Wednesday, November 19th, 2014

file4741238088930Every now and then a local police force will make an arrest that involves illegal gambling. Across the United States, individuals will host illegal poker and gambling games for players to be able to take part and of course to make a profit. Just recently, WBTV reported that an elderly woman was arrested for hosting illegal poker games, making her the oldest person to ever be arrested for such crimes.

Mary Morgan is 90 years of age and decided to host poker games in the state of Georgia. Police raided her home recently and arrest Morgan as well as 15 other people in the process. Morgan now faces gambling charges and was placed in jail for her crimes.

Morgan was under suspicion and investigated for two months before the small stakes game was busted. Apparently, the poker game provided tobacco and alcohol for sale, which is another illegal activity. Drugs was also said to have been found on the scene during the raid but what exactly has yet to be released. In total, the Saturday raid resulted in 16 people being arrested, one of which being Morgan.

During the raid, police took just over $4,000 in cash and then made a surprising decision against the 90 year old. Lawn equipment was also taken from the property as Morgan was also charged with keeping a disorderly house. Those who were in the home at the time of the raid and playing poker were charged with gambling by police. Playing poker in a live setting is deemed illegal in the state of Georgia and that is why Morgan and those involved were arrested and charged.

This is just one of many instances in which gamblers are subject to charges due to illegal gambling activity. Players are gonna play and sometimes get caught!

PokerStars Earns another California Partner

Wednesday, November 12th, 2014

pssiPokerStars partnered with the Morongo Band of Mission Indians a few months ago in preparation for online poker in the state of California. The online poker room recently announced they are now working with the San Manuel Band of Indians in support of online poker in the state. According to a report by CardPlayer, the Amaya Gaming Group now adds the tribe to the agreement they have with the Morongo tribe as well as three card rooms in the state.

PokerStars has seen very little support from the tribes in the state as most want to see a bad actor clause enacted in the state. The bad actor clause would keep anyone who operated online poker after the UIGEA was created from offering online poker, PokerStars being one such company. With the addition of the San Manuel tribe to the partnership in the state, PokerStars now seems to have even more hope of offering online poker in the United States.

Of course, California does not currently offer online poker, but if the option is legalized, PokerStars, the two tribes and three card rooms; the Hawaiian Gardens Casino, Commerce Casino and Bicycle Casino are involved in the deal with Amaya Gaming. San Manuel Band of Mission Indians operate slots, poker, blackjack and bingo in the state and now look forward to working with PokerStars.

Lynn Valbuena, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians Chairwoman, stated that the tribe is pleased to join the coalition and are convinced that the various interests must work together if they are to be successful in creating a well-regulated environment and a best-in-class internet poker industry for the state. PokerStars is also happy to be partnered with San Manuel and are looking forward to working with Legislature to develop the industry in the state along with other stakeholders and those who have a vested interest.
