Letter of Support Written by California Coalition in Favor of iPoker

Thursday, April 14th, 2016

The state of California has yet to be able to pass legislation in regards to online poker, despite many efforts over the past few years. It seems as though now there is potential with AB 2863, a measure on the table in the state, is going to hearing next week. The bill is sponsored by Adam Gray, an assemblyman in the state, which would legalize and regulate iPoker in the state.

To show their support, the coalition of Indian tribes, PokerStars and several card rooms, known as the PokerStars Coalition, have shown their support for the legislation. In the letter sent to Gray, the Coalition stated that they are in support of Gray’s bill, that the measure will protect consumers while creating jobs and strengthening the economy of the state. The letter goes on to state that legalizing and regulating the activity will be good for poker players as well as consumers who will be able to take part in a regulated in a safe environment.

The Coalition stated they are proud to be supporting the bill that would establish a competitive marketplace, with the regulation of operators and service providers, consumer protections and a reasonable return for the state.

For some time, the Coalition has worked with legislators and other parties interested in the industry to move forward with the issues of policies regarding online poker. The hope of the Coalition is that Gray’s measure will move forward, reaching the governor’s desk and gaining his signature.

The hearing is a good sign for poker players in the state but it will still be some time still if legislation moves forward. It may not even be this year for the state to see a measure passed for players to be able to enjoy online poker gaming within the state’s borders.

Bot Suspicions Arise at PokerStars TCOOP

Friday, January 29th, 2016

PokerStars regularly hosts events for players to enjoy online, including tournament series the brand has created themselves. The Turbo Championship of Online Poker is one such series that is popular with players as it offers quick game play and affordable buy-ins. The recent edition of the TCOOP has now resulted in questioning as to whether or not a runner up to an event was a bot or an actual human player.

PokerStars investigated the matter and has concluded that the player was real and not a bot used during game play. The incident took place during TCOOP 08 which was a no limit hold’em event with Turbo, Big Antes, and Optional Re-Entry. The event had a guaranteed prize pool of $200,000 and towards the end of the event, a representative for PokerStars opened a chat with HostMattieM to set a deal with the final two players IvanHaldi of Russia and LuckboxStami of Finland.

The PokerStars Host was requested by LuckboxStami to present the options left with $4,000 left to play for if both players agreed to a deal. The host came back with the final numbers that would give LuckboxStami just over $40,000 and IvanHaldi just over $39,000. Each could then win the remaining money and a TCOOP bracelet by claiming the final win.

LuckboxStami agreed to the deal immediately by stating “I agree” in the chat box. The opponent was silent. The host asked for someone to help in Russian but IvanHaldi still did not respond. A private chat was tried by the host but no answer still. After about an hour of trying to contact the player, LuckboxStami began to suggest that the player is actually a bot.

The host tried everything possible to make a deal due to the fact that big money was on the line. Play finally resumed and LuckboxStami asked PokerStars to look into the matter. In the end, LuckboxStami was able to win more, earning just over $48,000, with PokerStars stating an investigation proved the player was real and not a bot.

This is a big deal for the United States online poker industry as PayPal has been avoiding the online gambling industry like the plague. Members of PayPal couldn’t even mention gambling terms in notes at PayPal in fear of having their account shut down.

PayPal is now available as a form of deposit for players at the US WSOP sites and a big bonus is that the WSOP is offering an actual bonus for players to use the deposit method. Players who deposit at least $100 can earn a free $10 Tournament Ticket. The deposit is only good until the 30th of September, giving players a little more time to take part.

Players Club Live at Full Tilt

Thursday, August 27th, 2015

Full Tilt PokerFull Tilt has made several changes over the past few weeks that has the online poker industry abuzz. The most recent change comes in the form of a new rewards option for players. The Players Club is part of the latest phase of changes to come to Full Tilt. The new loyalty program is for those who enjoy the game of poker in a recreational way.

Dominic Mansour is the Managing Director of Full Tilt and stated that this new program is geared towards recreational players. Most reward programs are centered around players who produce large volume in game play. With this new option, players who simply enjoy playing online will be able to be rewarded.

Every player who is a member of Full Tilt will automatically be enrolled in the Players Club. The club includes a special game titled The Deal which players can enjoy with Coins. The coins are earned during game play based on how many Full Tilt Points are earned by the player. The faster a FTP is earned the quicker coins are earned.

The game of The Deal costs one coin and a player will see seven cards dealt face down. The player will then choose two cards to be discarded. The five remaining cards will be used to create a poker hand. Prizes will then be awarded based on the strength of the hand. Players have the ability to earn a jackpot prize which starts at $25,000 and will increase by three cents as every player enjoys the game.

As a member of the Players Club, players will also have access to additional promotions and events. Special tournaments and prizes are awarded to those who continue to log in on consecutive days. Players can also access the Edge Program which is a reward option for the higher volume players. This option has three levels and provides cashback for FTPs based on a rolling day average or number of FTP earned.

Reggie Jones-Sawyer Reschedules Online Poker Bill to Hearing Next Month

Wednesday, July 15th, 2015

file4741238088930It was just one week ago that Reggie Jones-Sawyer, an Assemblyman of California, decided to pull his online poker bill from a state hearing. The July 8th hearing was supposed to have included AB 167, but the Assemblyman removed the bill last minute. The bill has now been added to a hearing scheduled for next month to be heard by the Assembly Governmental Organization Committee.

The hearing date has yet to be announced but we do know the date will have to be after the 17th. This is when legislature will return from a summer break. The hearing will help to determine if online poker will be passed in the 2015 legislative session. Many feel as though the option will not be passing this year.

Summer recess begins on the 17th of July and will be on break until the 17th of August. From this day in August, legislation will only have until the 11th of September to move forward. Any legislation for online poker will need to pass by this date and will then be added to the desk of the governor for approval.

Online poker has basically been considered a no-go for California despite the fact that AB 431 by Adam Gray has been passed by the GO and Appropriations Committee and Jones-Sawyer’s bill has been added to the upcoming hearing. Little progress has taken place in the state especially considering the fact that Indian tribes, card rooms and race tracks cannot seem to come to an agreement on how online poker should be made available within the state.

There is only a small window of time before legislation will be null and void within the state. There is still hope for California to move forward with online poker bills but it does not seem as though there is enough time for legislation to come to fruition within the state.

California Cardrooms to receive visits by Pros of PokerStars

Wednesday, July 8th, 2015

pssiFor months now, the state of California has tried to enter the online gambling industry. Interested in online poker, officials have introduced legislation but have yet to move forward in legalizing the option. PokerStars have a valid interest in the state, with partnerships with cardrooms and Indian Tribes, hoping to be involved in online poker gaming if legislation is passed.

PokerStars has launched an online site to help residents learn more about online poker gaming and how the state of California would be affected if the option was allowed. Now, the brand has announced that their Team Pros will be traveling throughout the state to help promote the game.

The tour is titled Let California Play and will be used to raise awareness among residents in the state. The benefits of online poker regulation will be explained and the pros will be using their knowledge of the game to help players determine what to expect if the state enters the industry.

Included in the tour will be top pros visiting card rooms over eight different stops. The pros include:

Jason Somerville

Liv Boeree

Daniel Negreanu

Chris Moneymaker

Vanessa Selbst

The pros will visit the California cardrooms, speaking and taking part in special tournaments. Card players will be able to take part in game play against the pros, an exciting option for any poker player. Negreanu stated that it is important for poker players to make their voices heard among the decision makers in the state and to tell the officials to Let California Play.

PokerStars works with the Hawaiian Gardens, Commerce and Bike cardrooms as well as the Morongo and San Manuel tribes. Along with the tour, the groups work together to run the Californians for Responsible iPoker website. These are the first steps of the coalition to help move the state forward to offer online poker gaming.

Brandon Wittmeyer Wins New WSOP Event

Wednesday, July 1st, 2015

file4741238088930Every year when the World Series of Poker rolls around, players have come to expect certain events. We all know there will be high roller events, the starting event of the casino employees as well as the main event. It is also common to find the WSOP officials have added new events for players to enjoy. New events give players in Las Vegas the opportunity to compete in a different type of event as well as give the WSOP a chance to see what event types might be more appealing to players.

This year, the WSOP featured a $1,500 50/50 No Limit Hold’em event which provided players with a unique format. Half the field would finish in the money with a prize of at least $1,000. Once the event reached the final ten percent, the payout structure would return to normal and offer much higher prizes for the top finishers.

The first ever run of the event was sponsored by DraftKings and it was Brandon Wittmeyer who outlasted the field of 1,123 to earn the first place win. Wittmeyer earned a prize of $200,618 and his first ever WSOP bracelet. This was the second time the poker player made a final table during the WSOP.

In the end, Wittmeyer had to face Derek Gomez in heads up play to earn the first place win. During the final hand, Gomez was all-in and Wittmeyer called. Gomez showed A-10 off-suite with Wittmeyer holding A-Q of hearts. The flop fell K-10-2-2-Q, giving Wittmeyer the pair on the river and the first place win.

Final Results:

Finish Player Name Prize
1 Brandon Wittmeyer $200,618
